Test generators are used to create and enter questions, in which the program prepares the tests. Depending on the test generator chosen, the features would vary. According to, Roblyer (pg 159-160, 4th Edition) there are several capabilities of such a software tool and are laden with a variety of advantages.
Benefits of Test Generators for the teacher:-
• Test creation and revision procedures-
1. The software generates exams or tests within a criterion layout. There is uniformity.
2. The teacher does not have the burden of re-formatting the pages
3. It enables the teacher to use a variety of methods, in designing tests. (multiple choices, fill in the blanks, true/false. Matching, short answer types and essay types tests)
4. Any necessary updates, changes and deletions can easily be achieved without disrupting overall format of the tests.
• Questions are randomly produced- Items for the tests are randomly pulled from a pool of questions to create different versions of the same question. This prevents “wandering eye syndrome” as a student sits the examination.
• Questions are selected based on a specific criteria- Teachers are given the opportunity to select the criteria in which the tests must follow may it be only on a particular curriculum objective or content area.
• Provision of Answer Keys- An answer key is automatically generated. This makes a teacher tasks much easier and hassle free.
• Test item banks- Test generators allow the use of existing question pools or test item banks. Some offer these banks for purchase in different content areas. Programs can also import question banks prepared on word processes.
Benefits of Test Generators for the teacher:-
• Students will be exposed to a variety of tests that exposes them to how examinations can be presented. The become familiar with answering questions, no matter the form it is presented.
• Since teachers are eased from actually setting tests and activities, students are subjected to gain more teacher interaction and are able to cover more curriculum content. This in itself is a long term advantage.
